In 1986 The Afghan Whigs were started by students of the University of Cincinnati Rick McCollum (guitar), John Curley (bass), Greg Dulli (vocals and guitar), and Steve Earle (drums). Two years later the band issued its first full-length album called Big Top Halloween on the Ultrasuede label. The Up in It LP was released on the Sub Pop label in 1990.
